This is easily the hardest decision we have had to make so far in the almost eight years that Inside The Newsroom has existed, but as we continue to grow, it is a necessary one. Substack has been, and continues to be, a truly awesome platform that has literally changed media for the better. But as we progress in our mission to become the one-stop shop for all things journalism, Ghost provides us the best opportunity to realize those goals.

I have some exciting, yet bittersweet news to share with you today. After seven memorable years on Substack, Inside The Newsroom will be moving to Ghost within the next couple of weeks.

Why the Move?

This isn’t a decision I made lightly. Substack has been a great home for me, for Inside The Newsroom, and, I hope, for each and every one of you. It has been home to some of my biggest podcast interviews, where I went public about the chicanery I faced at my previous employers, and where I got an adrenaline rush each and every time I sent a newsletter.

But as Inside The Newsroom continues to grow, I’ve been thinking about what platform best serves you and this newsletter the best.

With more control over user experience, better customization options, and the ability to create and launch my gargantuan list of new features, Ghost gives us the best pathway to turning Inside The Newsroom into a full-on journalism resources hub. That has always been my vision, and that is why this move is necessary.

What This Means for You

The good news: Nothing really changes from your perspective, and you won’t need to do anything. You’ll still get the same weekly newsletter, the same curated opportunities, the same tools and resources. The content you love isn’t going anywhere.

What will change: A better website experience. Easier navigation. Faster load times. A cleaner archive of past newsletters. And a platform that gives us more room to grow and improve how we serve you.

The Timeline

We’re making the move over the next couple of weeks. I’ll keep you updated as we transition, and I’ll make sure you know exactly when the new site goes live. Your subscription will transfer seamlessly — you won’t need to do anything.

Submit your best work: Awards are competitive. Don’t submit something you’re not proud of. Wait for your best work, or don’t submit at all.

Follow the format requirements: If they want PDFs, send PDFs. If they want links, send links. If they want specific word counts, hit those counts. Attention to detail matters.

Write a strong entry statement: Many awards require a statement explaining why your work deserves recognition. Take this seriously. Explain what makes your work special.

Submit early: Don’t wait until the last minute. Technical issues happen, and you don’t want to miss a deadline because of a website crash or email problem.

Keep records: Save copies of your submissions, confirmation emails, and any correspondence. You’ll want these if questions come up.

Don’t get discouraged: Awards are subjective, and rejection doesn’t mean your work isn’t good. Keep creating, keep submitting, and keep improving.

Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.

Last week we talked about being comfortable with the uncomfortable, today I want to talk about December.

December is a strange month. It means different things to different people, and sometimes it means different things to the same person on different days.

For me, December is a signal to slow down. The year is ending, deadlines are wrapping up, and there’s permission to exhale. The calendar is filled with quiet moments, and everything seems to be less frantic. It’s a time to reflect on what I’ve done, what I’ve learned, and what I’ve survived.

But then December is also a sprint to the finish line. The year is ending, and there’s so much left to do. Projects need to be completed, goals need to be met, and the pressure to finish strong can overwhelm. The holidays become something to navigate around, not something to slow down for. Every day counts, and the clock is ticking louder than usual.

I’ve been thinking about what December means for journalists specifically. We don’t get to choose when news happens, and the calendar doesn’t pause for our personal rhythms. Stories break during holiday dinners. Deadlines don’t respect vacation time. The news cycle doesn’t care that we’re supposed to be slowing down or speeding up or relaxing or stressing.

But maybe that’s the point. December, like every other month, is what we make of it. There’s no right way to experience it, no correct pace to maintain, no proper balance to strike. Some of us will push harder this month. Some of us will pull back. Some of us will do both, sometimes in the same day.

The only thing that matters is that we’re honest with ourselves about what we need, and that we give ourselves — and each other — the grace to experience December however it comes.
