Happy Monday folks! A huge update to the job board this week after we added more than 600 new jobs, and will be adding even more throughout the day.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, I’m going to be finally sending out a mini survey/feedback request later this week, so please keep an eye out for that. Our intention is to make the newsletter/job board the best value for money around, so this is your chance to tell us what you want from it and we’ll do our best to deliver.

EU Investigates Facebook: EU antitrust regulators have opened an investigation into Facebook’s acquisition of customer service platform Kustomer. It follows claims it would reduce competition and allow Facebook to collect even more data for personalized ads.
Greece Wildfire Evacuations: Forest fires have forced thousands of people to evacuate Athens, amid one of Greece’s worst heat waves in decades that’s seen temperatures reach 42 degrees celsius. Wildfires have also hit neighboring Turkey, Italy and Albania.
Belarusian Olympian Fears For Life: Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, whose grandmother warned her not to return home from the Olympics for safety reasons, feared for her life after she criticized her coaches on social media. Poland has granted Tsimanouskaya asylum, while her coaches were booted from the Olympic village by the IOC in Tokyo.
Boris Supports Belarus Opposition: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has shown his support for Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Belarus’ opposition leader. Tsikhanouskaya aims to restore democracy in her country amid President Alexander Lukashenko’s crackdown on civil society.
Wildcats Return to the Netherlands: Wildcats have returned to forests in the southern Netherlands after they disappeared centuries ago due to hunting and deforestation. The country has altered its forest management to focus less on harvesting wood and more on nature conservation.

Beirut Blast Mental Health Crisis One Year On: The port explosion that devastated Beirut one year ago continues to haunt city residents, who have been scarred by the psychological aftershocks of the disaster. The number of monthly calls to a local suicide helpline have doubled to more than one thousand since the blast.
Deadly Oil Tanker Attack Off Oman Coast: A tanker was attacked while traveling from Tanzania to the U.A.E., killing two crew members on board. The U.S., UK and Israel blamed Iran for the attack, who denied the accusations. Attacks on commercial shipping are common in the region, where tensions between Israel and Iran run high.
Palestinians Facing Eviction Offered Deal: Palestinian residents of disputed properties in East Jerusalem who were facing forcible eviction have been offered a compromise deal by Israel’s supreme court. They will now be allowed to remain in their homes with “protected status,” as long as they pay an annual fee.
Florida Threatens Ben & Jerry’s Boycott: Florida governor Ron DeSantis has threatened for his state to divest from Unilever, the parent company of Ben & Jerry’s, unless it reinstates ice cream sales in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Israel and Lebanon Exchange Fire: Israel has responded to rocket fire from Lebanese terrorist group and political party Hezbollah, by firing artillery shells back over the border. No injuries or damages were reported, though an escalation in violence looms.

Bodies Found in River Between Tigray and Sudan: Witnesses retrieved at least 30 corpses from the banks of the Setit River that borders Ethiopia and Sudan. According to an Ethiopian surgeon, the bodies had their hands tied and showed evidence of gunshot wounds.
Endangered Wild Dogs Find New Home in Malawi: Four genetically different groups of African wild dogs were successfully translocated from South Africa and Mozambique to Malawi, as part of efforts to conserve the species. Fewer than 6,000 are estimated to be left on the continent.
GM Mosquitoes Could Eliminate Malaria: Scientists have genetically engineered female mosquitoes to render them infertile, preventing them from transmitting malaria. Lecturers labelled the feat “exciting”, but cautioned that “ethical” and “regulatory” questions remained unanswered.
Nigeria Cholera Surge: A recent cholera outbreak has hit 22 out of 36 states, alongside an increase in Covid-19 cases. Doctors blame the rainy season for the cholera surge, which is caused by contaminated water.
Somali FGM Death Sparks Call for Action: A 13-year-old girl in Somalia has bled to death after undergoing female genital mutilation, the first FGM casualty since 2018. Although FGM is legal in the country, her parents say they regret the decision to cut their daughter. FGM rates have increased during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Wuhan Tests Entire Population: The Chinese city where Covid-19 was first detected in 2019 recorded its first infections in over a year, so it will now test its entire 9.2 million population for the virus. The highly transmissible Delta variant and tourism season have meant China is experiencing its largest outbreak in months.
Tokyo Olympics Sustainability Goals Despite pledging to make this year’s Olympic Games carbon negative by offsetting 2.3 million metric tons of carbon footprint, researchers claim the Olympics’ sustainability is declining.
China Reveals 620kph Train: The prototype for a new, high-speed Maglev train, which runs on high-temperature superconducting power and travels at speeds of up to 385 miles per hour, has been revealed in China. The country’s first high-speed Maglev train started operating in 2003.
Hong Kong Police Arrest Anthem Booer: A 40-year-old man was detained and accused of “insulting” the Chinese national anthem after booing a medal ceremony inside a shopping mall. He was arrested on suspicion of breaking the National Anthem Ordinance, which carries a maximum prison sentence of three years.
Turkey Slams Afghan Resettlement: Turkey is angry at the U.S. government’s proposal to relocate thousands of Afghan citizens as refugees in the U.S. via third countries. Turkey would house refugees for 12 to 14 months until applications are processed.
Latin America 🌎
Mexican Referendum Flops: A referendum on whether to investigate former Mexican political leaders garnered a turnout of just seven percent from eligible voters, according to initial results. The referendum needed a turnout of 40 percent to make it binding.
Peruvians Protest New President’s PM Appointment: Peru’s new President Pedro Castillo is under fire for appointing Guido Bellido, a far-left lawmaker and member of his Marxist party, as the country’s new prime minister. Castillo promised to appoint moderates to his cabinet.
Venezuelan Journalists Bus Broadcast: In Venezuela, where more than 60 news outlets have closed since President Nicolas Maduro took office in 2013, journalists have resorted to delivering newscasts on buses in order to preserve press freedom. Others have been handing out free newspapers.
Brazil Electoral Court to Investigate Bolsonaro: Brazil’s far-right, President Jair Bolsonaro, failed to meet a deadline to prove his claims that the country’s electoral system is unreliable and makes auditing results impossible. The court has now applied for him to be targeted in a probe into the dissemination of fake news.
Floods Block Food From Refugees in Columbia: Flooding in the region of Ituango, Antioquia, has cut off crucial food and medical supplies for thousands of refugees displaced due to recent militia violence. The UN says 1,300 of those displaced are children.
