Hello From Peru 🇵🇪
I remember the first time I thought it would be cool to work and travel at the same time. It was 2010, I was 18 and the music blog I’d started — poppunkworld.com (please don’t laugh) — was on the rise. The logical next step was obviously to drop out of university to focus on it full-time! Common sense prevailed and I ended up staying in university, pouring every spare minute I had into PPW until I finally closed it down in 2014 to prepare for journalism graduate school.
Nevertheless, the dream was born and more than a decade later, it’s surreal to say that I’m actually living out that dream.
Why Peru? Well, partly because its capital — Lima — shares its name with the hometown of my favourite band as a teenager — Hit The Lights. But mostly because of the spirituality of the Incas and also it’s by the beach and there’s lots of sunshine.
I’ve not yet been here for two weeks, but it feels like so much has happened already. As soon as I checked into my hostel I was busy socializing, going on walking tours and tasting the local cuisine. And on my fourth morning, I was introduced to a 5.6 magnitude earthquake.
At around 5:30am, I was awoken by a light rumbling around the dormitory. Still half asleep, I just thought someone had shut a door forcefully or roadworks had started early outside. But then came the big one. Having your entire room rattle incessantly for about 10 seconds and then seeing the trees outside vibrating wasn’t in my dream as an 18-year-old. As breathtaking as it was, I can safely say I don’t want to be in another earthquake any time soon.
It only took another day before I was presented with my next bump in the road: food poisoning. Part of that local cuisine included fried chicken from a “well-known” street vendor. Let me tell you, I chomped that chicken down to the bone without a care in the world, crying “muy bueno” in a strange Italian accent to anyone who’d listen.
It was the first time I’d had food poisoning and man it sucks. By Saturday, I was bereft of any energy, couldn’t sleep and no matter how much water I drank, my pee was still the same traffic light amber. Pitifully thinking I was on my last legs, I checked myself into an Airbnb for the week, and left the hostel with that street vendor very much well-known to my insides.
Still recovering, I've been taking it easy with some light walks along the stunning Malecón de Miraflores and taking in some beautiful views looking out to sea…
I did, however, manage to go swimming with sea lions on Wednesday! Located in and around the Palomino Islands, there are almost 10,000 sea lions that live there year-round. As I was jumping off the boat into the water, it occurred to me that I now shared space with an animal with lion in its name. But our guide assured us that in the water “we were all friends.”
Being about a foot away from hundreds of wild animals in their natural habitat really was exhilarating, and it wasn't just sea lions that we saw. You're going to be disappointed if you expected me to remember all the different types of birds we passed, but there were penguins, and lots of them. Anyway, the experience is one I'll always remember.
Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn't provide a Covid update. Like most countries, Peru has been devastated since the onset of Covid, and continues to be so now with the Omicron variant. To enter Peru, I didn’t need to provide a negative Covid test, instead just proof of vaccination.
I’m not here to cast opinion on whether that’s right or wrong, but it is strange considering that wearing two masks or a single N95 mask inside public spaces is legally required, and there's currently a curfew between 11pm and 4am here in Lima.
Still, I’m pleased to be in a country that seems to actually take Covid seriously. No matter where I go, people are wearing masks regardless of whether they’re inside or outside, and to get into most shopping centers and supermarkets, I have to show the security officer my vaccine certificate.
