✍️✍️ Job Deadlines ✍️✍️ — April 8
Job-board two-year anniversary plus hundreds of deadlines across the UK, U.S. Canada and Europe at the BBC, The Times, Associated Press, Euractiv, The New Humanitarian, CBC and the Washington Post
Hello folks and happy Friday! Hope everyone had productive weeks and are ready for the weekend!
I've been back in London for almost two weeks now, and have already lost any resemblance of a tan I accumulated on my travels. Ugh. The good news is that I move into a new flat tomorrow, so I can enjoy the delights of London in the summer from one place.
Be sure to check out Monday's new jobs where we added close to another 1,000 openings. And don't forget to take advantage of our free seven-day trials to see if it's for you before paying.
Today also marks two years since I launched the job board. In April, 2020, most countries were barely a month into lockdown restrictions and trying to wrap their heads around what social distancing was.
The situation was surreal. Here in the UK you were only allowed out of your home to buy groceries and medicine, and for one piece of exercise a day. In Italy, you couldn't leave without written permission.
I watched naively from my makeshift bedroom office. I witnessed friends of mine instantly made redundant, and students I'd helped have their internships just outright cancelled.
At the time, I'd just accepted a new job at the Wall Street Journal and had some extra time on my hands. So I started throwing a few hundred jobs at newsrooms that were still hiring on a spreadsheet for everyone. It was my way of trying to plug the holes that were puncturing the journalism industry.
People took to it, so I continued over the weeks and months to the point where we approached 1,000 jobs. Things become so big that I spent around 20 hours each weekend maintaining and updating the board. So in September of that year, I decided to charge for access in order to afford to pay a couple freelancers and students to help me.
But that decision turned out to be the pinnacle of irony, as it would get me into a world of trouble with WSJ, which ultimately led to my resignation. You can read all about that below.
Throughout that whole ordeal, I knew each weekend I had the job board to update, which kept me and at least put a smile on a few faces.
Fast forward to today, we're now a community of more than 20,000, and we list more than 3,000 openings in more than a dozen countries. So this is just a thank you for all of your support over the past couple of years and beyond. Together we continue to build this thing and we're just getting started. 🙏 💪
