✍️✍️ Job Deadlines ✍️✍️ — August 26
August deadlines plus Daniel's Substack newsletter recommendations
Happy Friday y’all. I’m continuing my way through Colombia, this time to the country’s ‘second city’ Medellin. It’ll be nice to descend to only 1,500m/5,00ft above sea level, after spending the past week with fatigue and headaches in Bogotá at 2,640m/8,660ft asl.
On Monday I hiked 2.4km up Monserrate hill, the home of The Sanctuary that overlooks the entire city. The path itself had an incline of 25%, so after beginning at a sprightly pace, I quickly slowed down to a pathetic hobble.
Yesterday I took a trip of a lifetime to a real-life coffee farm, at the La Campesina organic coffee plantation. I’m so completely obssessed with coffee that I look forward to going to bed, because it means I wake up “quicker” to have my morning coffee. At one point not-so-long-ago, I’d even take a great big sniff of my bag of ground coffee to get me through the night.
These days I go to bed without the need for a cheeky inhale, though I do consider myself a faux coffee connoisseur, and totally geeked out on all the things I learned, and also cringed at all the things I do to completely ruin my cup of coffee.
For example, after you’ve boiled your kettle, you’re supposed to let the water cool down to roughly 80% so it doesn’t burn the coffee beans and lose some of their flavour. Makes total sense right? Also, don’t stir your french press of coffee once it’s brewed, as all you’re doing is mixing the good stuff with the dregs. Another of my greatest mistakes.
Coffee aside, today I’ve included my top recommendations for other Substack newsletters below. There’s a solid mix of journalism/media-focused and great random other newsletters that I’ve enjoyed reading.
Be sure to also check out Monday’s newsletter where we added more than 800 new jobs to the board, including our featured Associate Editor opening at Project Syndicate. And we also dug a little deeper into the recent Gannett layoffs with some other tales around the country of how and why local journalism continues to be killed off.
That’s all from me this week. Pictures from Monserrate and the coffee farm below, enjoy your weekends and we’ll speak again on the other side. 🇨🇴☕️
