Hey folks. Sombre mood today because of the ongoing events in Ukraine. I still can’t quite believe that a full-scale invasion is actually taking place. It’s so surreal to see movie-like war scenes play out in real life.
I think that sentiment is shared throughout a lot of Europe. For most of us, we’ve been so fortunate to have never experienced war, or even come close. A result of our diplomacy era has led to the notion that ‘they’ll work it out in the end’ or ‘it’ll never actually happen’. But it’s that complacency that’s provided such a jolt to the system.
The warnings from the intelligence community were there. For weeks and months — if not years — forecasts of what Putin was planning were there for everyone to see. But negotiating with a dictator can only go so far. As chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov put it:
I’m still collecting my thoughts about everything, so I’ll stop there for now. It feels moot to promote Wednesday’s Q&A on health inequality reporting with Vicky Gayle from The Bureau of Investigative Reporting. But please do have a read as there’s lots of good stuff in there.
