Daniel's keynote talk at #AEJMC22 plus new jobs at Bloomberg, CBS, Elle, ITV, LA Times, National Geographic, Politico, Scripps and Sky News
Hello folks, happy Monday! Apologies for the lack of a newsletter on Friday, one too many things cropped up and I ran out of time.
Part of why I ran out of time was because on Thursday I was a keynote speaker at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication‘s 2022 conference! My talk was on what the future holds for editing, and what I’ve found to be the latest hiring trends. It was my first time speaking at a conference, let alone as a keynote speaker — still sounds strange — so I spent the entire week practicing and making sure I didn'’t stumble over too many words.
During grad school six years ago, I remember dreaming of one day being asked to speak at a conference, so I’m especially grateful to AEJMC for being my first. On the morning of the talk, I was surprisingly calm, which was weird, so I wrote down some thoughts on why, of which I’ve included at the bottom of this newsletter if you’re interested. If you’re not, check out some of my quotes among other best bits at #AEJMC22.
In other news, we just ‘dropped’ our second batch of candidates on the Candidate Board, taking our total up to well over 100 on the portal! If you’re interested in joining as a candidate, you can do so by subscribing or signing up for a free trial below. If you’re an employer looking to hire the best and hungriest talent, everything you need can be found here.
On Thursday I’m hitting the road again, this time spending a month in Toronto and Colombia for a couple of weddings, so expect some cool pictures and perhaps a travel special or two. Until then, enjoy your weeks and check out our new/featured jobs below, followed by some deeper thoughts on my first keynote. Adios! 👋

Nothing is Realized Overnight
On Thursday I had my keynote talk at AEJMC 2022. I’m not sure how many were in attendance, but to be honest it doesn’t matter. Perhaps it would have been different if I was actually attending the conference in Detroit instead of Zooming in, but the audience element didn’t give me too much stress. The main source of anxiety leading up to the talk was whether I had enough material — 30 to 40 minutes is a bloody long time to talk for if you’re not Barack Obama, and who the heck would want to listen to me for that long. But now that I’ve given a few guest lectures to various university classes, public speaking is no longer a huge fear of mine.
How do I deal with my anxiety these days? Well for one, I’ve learned that anxiety is our brain telling us something. As it pertains to the keynote, it was making sure that I had enough material on paper and making sure it was actually worth listening to. Although I felt I’d checked both boxes, I still felt some nerves jangling around a few hours before. But instead of associating those nerves with anxiety, I was able to separate my emotions, and frame the nerves as a symbol of how much I cared and even maybe a little excited.
There’s a world not too long ago where, regardless of what others told me and I told myself to try to stay relaxed, I would have been riddled with anxiety right up until game time. Heck, I probably would have considered pulling out altogether.
The point here is that assuaging my anxiety didn’t happen on Thursday. Over the past 12 months I’ve worked tirelessly identifying the difference between hypothetical and practical anxiety, embracing my emotions and understanding that they’re trying to tell me something, knowing the human brain can be rewired if we dedicate enough time to rewiring it, and applying my knowledge of cognitive distortion in real-time. All of this new awareness gave me an inner calm and confidence I’ve rarely felt, which simply cannot be learned or practiced overnight.
