Some huge news over the weekend out of Gannett, who reopened the age-old debate of what role opinion journalism should have in newspapers. USA Today and more than 250 Gannett-owned dailies will be encouraged to scale back their editorial sections and political endorsements, in an attempt to stop alienating readers and earn back their trust.
Like most things in life, there isn’t a black and white solution. While I still believe there’s great value to publishing opinions, they shouldn’t replace facts. Facts always beat opinions, but unfortunately the latter have infiltrated our screens and pages more and more, especially on the prime time cable news shows.
The public is also exhausted. Exhausted from life-altering changes thanks to the pandemic, but also fatigued from being lectured at every twist and turn. They’re tired of being told what to think, and what they should and shouldn’t be doing. Instead they need time and energy to be free in their own minds with their own thoughts.
That said, I’ve also written previously that if newsrooms persist to make opinions central to their content and brands, they must do more to separate their news and opinion sections. Ironically, it’s my opinion that the majority of outlets don’t currently do enough.
