✍️✍️ Jobs Update ✍️✍️ — June 20
USA Today, Punchbowl News, Radio Free Europe, Canadian Press, DAZN, Der Spiegel, El Confidencial, Live Science, The Hill, Reuters, New York Times and hundreds more...
Happy Monday folks, hope we all had fab weekends. Few things to get through today so we’ll get straight to it and then get out of here.
First up is the explosive story by The Times that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly tried to hire his now wife Carrie Johnson as his chief of staff when foreign secretary. But just as the piece was published in the early print editions, it was mysteriously withdrawn without explanation or clarification.
According to The London Economic, “there were concerns about the influence such a story could have on readers of The Times and the Daily Mail, given their base is largely right-leaning Brits. The story was quashed, and only resurfaced to much quieter fanfare later down the line.” I can only imagine there’ll be more to come on this one…
In other similarly depressing news, the Charitable Journalism Project released new research on news deserts in the UK. While it’s focused on the UK, many of the findings transcend borders, including how the number of police PR officers often “rivals or outweighs” the number of local news reporters, and how Facebook has taken over. There’s a ton more in there and is definitely worth a read if you have a few minutes.
On Friday we looked at highlights from another report — the 2022 Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. And there’s also hundreds of job deadlines for the likes of the BBC, Hearst, Human Rights Watch, European Journalism Center, Liverpool Echo, Amnesty International and Bell Media. Thought of the Day 🤔
“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.” ― Elie Wiesel
