✍️✍️ Awards, Conferences, Events and Fellowship Deadlines ✍️✍️ — March 31
Elon Musk and Twitter's pay-for verification; plus new journalism jobs, awards, conferences, events and fellowship deadlines
Hello folks and a happy Friday to you all. In today’s newsletter, our calendar of journalism awards, conferences, events and fellowship deadlines is once again brimming with ~30 listings. New entries include the JournalismAI Fellowship Programme by the London School of Economics, the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Elizabeth Neuffer Human Rights Fellowship, and the News Product Alliance’s 2023 Summit.
If you haven’t already, check out Monday’s deep dive on TikTok after its CEO appeared in U.S. Congress last week for a grilling on its links to the Chinese Communist Party and concerns over its data harvesting. Several governments including in the U.S., UK, Canada and Europe have already banned the app from being used and downloaded on government devices, and a blanket-ban is a real possibility.
On Tuesday Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced that, starting next month, you will have to pay up to $11 (£9 | €10 | CAD$15) a month to appear in the platform’s new ‘For You’ section. The reasoning, Musk said, is to reduce the number of bots that have infected the platform.
While I agree with Musk’s efforts to get rid of the bots and might give the ‘For You’ feed a go one day, he also said that bots will be allowed to become verified, so it could still be littered with junk accounts. Additionally, having users pay for authenticity and then populate the platform with tweets and followers is fundamentally wrong.
For a number of reasons, my activity on Twitter has decreased to a virtual halt. Until the company stops jerking wildly one way and then another, I cannot trust it to act in the best interest of its users or content creators.
So that’s where my appeal comes in for you to share us with your networks so that we reach as many people as possible, without having to deal with Twitter. Substack has emerged as one of the only platforms that legitimately cares about its writers and readers. They have some incredibly exciting products in the short- and long-term pipeline, including letting writers invest in a piece of the pie!
So if you know friends, classmates, colleagues or even your grandparents that are looking for a job in journalism, or are interested in the nuance within the world of media, please do share us with them so we can continue to grow our community of almost 15,000 journalists around the world.
Lastly, fill out this form if your organization is hiring and we’ll help promote your openings. If you’re one of our paid subscribers, join our Candidate Board to have employers come to you directly.
That’s all! Check out our featured jobs at RadioFreeEurope and Politico Europe, and a taster of the upcoming job deadlines you can find on the full job board.
