New Gannett layoffs; updated conferences, deadlines, events and fellowships
Hello folks, itttt’s Friday! A rare sunny and blue-skies day in London town and I’m enjoying some good strong coffee and morning World Cup football.
It’s been one helluva past few months as part of a crazy year. I’m going to do a more reflective piece another time, but for now I must inform you that I need to take a break with some time off.
So today’s newsletter will be the penultimate one of 2022 and Monday’s will be the last “official” edition — we’ll be back in your inbox in early January. I might still pop up once or twice, but for the most part I’ll be resting my little brain.
Until then, we’ve updated our list of upcoming conferences, events, grants and fellowships below. Check out Monday’s jobs and news update where we looked at some of the most bizarre headlines of the 2022 FIFA World Cup so far. And hundreds of new openings including at the likes of Amnesty International, Bloomberg, the Food Network, National Geographic, Scientific American and Sky News.
And be sure to check out two of our featured jobs whose deadlines are coming up in the next few days: Social Media Producer at Bellingcat and Copy Editor at Texas Monthly.
Lastly, an update on new impending layoffs at Gannett. In August, the owner of USA Today and more than 200 local dailies laid off more than 400 employees. In October, it imposed a week’s unpaid mandatory leave and suspended 401(k) contributions. Now, the company, which employs more than 12,000 people, said more redundancies were coming on December 1 and 2.
In August, we offered those affected a free month of access to our job and candidate boards. The same still applies. So if you’re affected in any way — now, in the past or in the future — email me at daniellevitt32@gmail.com and we’ll set you up.
That’s all for today, we’ll speak again on Monday for the final “official” newsletter of 2022. 👋

Phillips and Pereira joined forces to tackle the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and the threats posed to its inhabitants. They disappeared on 5 June 2022, in the Javari Valley, in the far western part of the state of Amazonas, close to Brazil's border with Peru. Ten days later, their remains were found close to where they had gone missing. Their killing is a reflection of the systemic violence that has been amplified, supported and, indeed, encouraged by Brazil's current federal government.
