🎂 Inside The Newsroom Turns Five Years Old
24 Hour 50% Birthday Discount; Plus new jobs at the BBC, Detroit Free Press, Houston Chronicle, LAist, NPR, Politico, Sky News, TBIJ, Univision and hundreds more
Hello folks, happy Tuesday! In today’s newsletter we were due to go through how to make our résumé stand out from the rest of the field, but unfortunately I had a little medical emergency within my family over the weekend, so I was unable to properly put everything together. Sincere apologies for that and we’ll aim to go again with that next week.
In other news, Inside The Newsroom turned five years old on Sunday! It’s been a helluva journey since I was sat in my Austin apartment wondering what I wanted to do with my life within journalism. It started with wanting to become a famous podcaster, to working for the Guardian, experiencing turmoil at the Wall Street Journal, to realizing how bloody fortunate I was to have this newsletter and all of you supporting me one way or another. We’ve been through a lot over the past half-a-decade — a global pandemic, layoffs and more layoffs — but we’re still here fighting and surviving.
As cliche as it sounds, I truly am more motivated and dedicated than ever before to finding you work and helping you navigate the never-ending rollercoaster that is the journalism industry. And as a small token of my indescribable appreciation, I’m offering a 50% discount off paid subscriptions for your first year! But grab it quick as the offer will expire at the end of tomorrow.👇👇👇
Here’s a reminder of everything you receive with a paid subscription starting from just $3/£2.50 per month or $24.50/£20 for the year:
1,500 journalism jobs all in one place.
Membership to the Candidate Board so employers find you directly.
Résumé and cover letter feedback.
A few other things I want to point your attention to and then we’ll get out of here. I’m super pleased, and completely honoured, to plug a new podcast by two long-time Inside The Newsroom subscribers. If you're looking to improve your storytelling skills and learn how to communicate your company's message more effectively to a broad audience, be sure to check out The Dejargonizer podcast. Hosted by communications advisor and former WSJ EMEA tech editor Amir Mizroch, and produced by award-winning audio journalist Astrid Landon (Le Figaro, FT, Stripe Press), each episode takes listeners inside a fun and informative startup storytelling masterclass.
Amir and Astrid found each other using our Candidate Board, which apart from warming my little heart, also shows that we don’t need to wade through hundreds of job applications and candidates on LinkedIn to get things done. Thank you Amir and Astrid, and go listen to their new project!
The Society of News Design’s annual award finalists are out, and there are seemingly an infinite amount of incredible projects under consideration. I always learn and leave with so much inspiration from SND, so I definitely recommend checking them out.
And lastly, if you’re an employer with an opening you want to promote now or in the future, fill out this quick form.
That’s it for today. Apologies again for not getting the résumé newsletter together in time, and I’ll see you again on Friday for another update to our Journalism Awards, Events and Fellowships Deadlines Calendar.🤘
