Okay, let’s get it. Tomorrow is of course the U.S. Midterm Elections. I’ll let the experts inform you on what to look out for with their respective guides:
What I found interesting over the past week was this joint piece by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune who looked into how churches are breaking the law by endorsing election candidates, yet the IRS consistently looks the other way. Per the piece:
“For nearly 70 years, federal law has barred churches from directly involving themselves in political campaigns, but the IRS has largely abdicated its enforcement responsibilities as churches have become more brazen about publicly backing candidates.”
That brings us onto the 2022 Global Impunity Index, published last week by the Committee to Protect Journalists. Among the main findings are:
Nobody has been held accountable in nearly 80% of 263 journalist murders in the past 10 years, and governments show little interest in tackling the issue.
At least 13 journalists were killed in Mexico in the first nine months of 2022, the highest number CPJ has ever documented in that country in a single year.
Somalia remains the worst offender for the eighth straight year. Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iraq, respectively, round out the top five countries on the index.
The other big news over the past week has been the mass layoffs at Twitter since Elon Musk bought the platform for a gargantuan $44 billion. Because of the steep price, and Musk tweeting that Twitter is currently losing $4 million per day, among his first moves were to layoff nearly half of its staff, and charge $8 for a blue verification check. So far, not good, as Musk also announced “a massive drop in revenue” due to dozens of prime companies pausing their advertising.
With disinformation at the center of the debate, an investigation by The Intercept found that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is “quietly broadening its efforts to curb speech it considers dangerous.” Among the key takeaways it found are:
Though DHS shuttered its controversial Disinformation Governance Board, a strategic document reveals the underlying work is ongoing.
DHS plans to target inaccurate information on “the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, racial justice, U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the nature of U.S. support to Ukraine.”
Facebook created a special portal for DHS and government partners to report disinformation directly.
That’s all from me today. Have a great week and we’ll speak again on Friday for more conferences, events and fellowship deadlines. Ciao 👋
