✍️ Jobs Update ✍️ — October 24
Hundreds of multimedia openings plus Margaret Sullivan's new book and how to outsmart election disinformation
Morning folks, it’s that time again as we add another 700+ jobs to the board, and gather a host of the latest news and events in journalism. Before we do, check out Friday’s deadlines newsletter with hundreds of cutoffs coming up before the end of the month.
We’ll start off with the Behind Local News Conference 2022, which will take place in Birmingham, UK, on November 11. The conference is free to attend and will dig into many of the opportunities and challenges faced by editors, social media and content managers in newsrooms.
We’re just over two weeks away from the U.S. Midterm Elections. As with all elections, disinformation will once again play a major role and there are a host of guides and tipsheets to go with it. The best I’ve seen is ProPublica’s guide on How to Outsmart Election Disinformation, which includes a comprehensive database of tweets deleted by politicians.
Staying on the subject of misinformation, the Knight Foundation recently studied the activity of more than 10 million tweets from 700,000 Twitter accounts. Among their major findings, two stood out to me:
79% of the tweets that link to fake and conspiracy news are concentrated to just 24 outlets
83% of accounts that spread fake and conspiracy news during the 2016 election are still active heading into the 2022 Midterms
Another area of journalism in need of significant reform is how we treat local journalists, often known and called “fixers” to the Western journalism community. Whether it’s the current war in Ukraine or plethora of other major conflicts and events around the world, they are too often forgotten and looked down upon. Fortunately, our friends at GIJN published a great piece on the contextual history of the importance of local reporters and tips on hiring them for the critical work they do.
And we’ll end today with Margaret Sullivan’s new book: Newsroom Confidential. Sullivan rose up the newsroom ranks and spent a number of years at the New York Times as its now-abolished public editor, and then as the Washington Post’s media columnist. Her book is both a behind-the-scenes tell-all and critical look at where she and the industry went wrong and can improve. Among her many surmizations, “too many journalists — worried about their reputations for neutrality, under pressure from corporate bosses, and mired in their comfortable traditions — are still doing their jobs the same old way,” she writes. “It’s not good enough.” You can buy the book here.
That’s all for today. Check out our featured jobs below as well as a taster of the more than 700 new jobs we added to the board over the weekend, with this week’s theme being multimedia openings. See you again on Friday!
