✍️ Jobs Update ✍️ — October 3
Photo and video jobs at the NY Times, Reuters, CBC, CBS, Condé Nast, Gray Television, Hearst, Paramount, Sky, The New Yorker and The Times Union
Hello folks, happy Monday! I had a great weekend filled with music, sports and comedy, and I’m super amped up for the week ahead. One thing I’ve learned over the past few weeks and months is that the less I work on weekends, the more energy and motivation I have to get after it when Monday morning arrives.
Few things I want to bring your attention to today that’ll hopefully start your week off right. First up is this great piece from Andy Hirschfeld — a New York-based reporter focusing on the cost of living — for the International Journalists’ Network, on how to build independent revenue streams. Whether it’s to supplement your full-time income or to eventually break out on your own, the time to start planning is now.
Also from IJNet via audience specialist Jessica Best is this column on how to staff a membership strategy if you’re a one-person newsroom. I’ve personally learned the hard way of what and what not to do in my time running this newsletter, and I wish I took more time to heed Jessica’s advice to offer a better product. Still, it’s never too late to learn.
And lastly, If you’re in the UK and looking for a media mentor, you have until October 7 to apply to the John Schofield Trust’s mentoring scheme. I have several mentors that I still stay in frequent touch with, some of whom I first met almost 10 years ago, and I can’t describe how much I’ve learned from them. Whether it’s through an official or unofficial programme, you’ve got nothing to lose and only stand to gain.
That’s all for today. Preview of this week’s new jobs are below, and the theme is photography and videography! I’ll be back in your inbox this week with our annual internships edition, so do keep an eye out for that. Have a great start to the week! 👋
