Hello folks, happy Monday. The big news over the weekend comes from Italy, whose general election was won by the far-right Brothers of Italy party, whose roots trace back to the neofascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), formed by former members of Benito Mussolini’s regime after World War II.
The election result means party leader Giorgia Meloni is set to become the country’s first ever female Prime Minister. But she must first form a government, likely to be an alliance of other right-wing and far-right parties, that some are saying is the most right-wing of the country’s 69 governments since Mussolini.
While the left-wing Democratic party held its vote share from 2018 at around 19%, it wasn’t enough to stop being brushed aside by the right-wing wave sweeping the country. That said, as Italy’s recent political history suggests, more turmoil and early elections are likely, born partly out of the difficulty of putting together a coalition that’s fit enough to govern and strong enough to last.
Like most elections, the next days, weeks and months will be unstable and uncertain. Unlike most elections, Italy’s new government must navigate its relationship with the EU at a time when Europe is united against Russia and Vladimir Putin for its invasion of Ukraine. It also has to deal with an historic energy and cost-of-living crisis accelerated by the war, meaning whatever the new government does, it might not be enough to stop the economic pain being felt by Italians and much of Europe.
