Following truth wherever it leads
Hello and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom, journalism’s job board.
Last week, we talked about vindication — when the world catches up to what you already knew. But there’s another bridge we cross as often: being wrong aka when you finally catch up to what the world has been trying to show you all along. Both moments ask for courage, to stand where you are and face what’s real.
In journalism, we cross that bridge more than we’d like to admit. The reporter who chased the wrong lead for months. The editor who killed a story that later won a Pulitzer somewhere else. The product strategist who fought against the feature that became the thing that saved the organization. The newsroom that dismissed the internet, then social media, then newsletters.
There’s no shame in being wrong, only the quiet ache of realizing that your map wasn’t as complete as you thought. But that’s how we develop wisdom — not in certainty, but in revision. What being wrong reveals that vindication doesn’t is where our thinking is too rigid, where our ego masquerades as conviction, and where we stop listening because we already decided we know.
The best journalists aren’t the ones who are always right. They’re the ones who can say “I see it now” without flinching. They don’t lose ground — they find their footing again and again. They find peace not in being right, but in following the truth wherever it leads, even when it leads away from where they thought they were going.
Vindication tells you, “You can trust what you saw.” Being wrong tells you, “You can trust what you’ll see next.” Both are bridges toward peace — one looks back with relief, the other forward with grace. And in journalism, that forward gaze is everything. The work isn’t about protecting your track record. It’s about getting closer to the truth, even when that means admitting you weren’t there yet.
Now, let’s get to this week’s jobs.
