Time management and 4,000 weeks on this planet
Hello folks, happy Wednesday and welcome to Inside The Newsroom, journalism's job board.
Hope everybody is having a good day thus far. More and more these days I’ve tried to find ways to let go of the internal pull to do more, to achieve more, and do it all in less time than ever. While I’ve certainly had success I could have only dreamed of, what I do have has never felt enough.
The endless supply of time management tools I’ve tried and implemented haven’t helped. In fact, they’ve only added to the problem, as all they essentially do is increase the capacity to take on even more unwanted tasks and responsibility, and so the process repeats itself.
Fortunately, I’ve made good progress over recent months, all of which has been encapsulated through a book that a friend recently passed me onto: Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman. It is a book on time management, but instead of offering yet another list of ways to be more efficient, the book’s message is simple: if you’re struggling to find the time to do everything that’s on your plate, then you’re probably doing too much. As soon as the plate is cleared, it will very quickly fill back up.
I never pretend to have the answers to age-old problems such as time and meaning, because everybody in this world is unique and different, and the best person to answer said questions is us as individuals. But I know I’m not alone in this feeling, so if you do feel this way, give the book a read or listen and I think it could be a great first step toward taking back control of the 4,000 weeks that we have on this planet.
Usually, this is the time where I now try to sell you a subscription but, in the spirit of today’s newsletter, I’m just going to drop a button for a free trial below, and get out of here before I ruin the vibe. Jobs, internships, fellowships, grants, events, freelance and awards are all below, have a great rest of your week folks. 🌊
