New York Post and WSJ turn on Trump + new openings at Apple, Amnesty, Atlantic, Bloomberg, Disney, Oprah, CBC, CBS, DAZN, ESPN, France TV, Globe and Mail, ITV, Liverpool Echo and hundreds more...
Hello folks, it’s that time of the week again. I had another long weekend playing softball, and am totally dragging today. Sorry for taking slightly longer to update the job board, but we’re all done and ready for you to get down and dirty in hundreds of new openings.
The other major news over the weekend came in the form of an excoriating editorial of Donald Trump by the New York Post. Referring to the attacks on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, the Post laid blame for the violence squarely on Trump, saying “There is no other explanation, just as there is no defense, for his refusal to stop the violence.” They concluded: “Trump has proven himself unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again.”
It wasn’t just the Post who blasted the former president. The Wall Street Journal also came out with a highly critical opinion piece, writing “Mr. Trump took an oath to defend the Constitution, and he had a duty as Commander in Chief to protect the Capitol from a mob attacking it in his name. He refused. He didn’t call the military to send help. He didn’t call Mr. Pence to check on the safety of his loyal VP. Instead he fed the mob’s anger and let the riot play out.” They concluded: “Character is revealed in a crisis, and Mr. Pence passed his Jan. 6 trial. Mr. Trump utterly failed his.”
This is significant because the Post and the Journal are two of Rupert Murdoch’s largest and most important media titles, who have historically supported Trump. As The Guardian points out, this could signal Murdoch tiring of Trump and be momentous for any potential run at re-election in 2024. But let’s not gloss over what’s happening in the background…
While using their platform to condemn something that ultimately needed to be condemned, the pivot also highlights the speed at which news outlets can turn on a subject after years of propping them up, and the power the individuals that pull the strings within corporate media have. The media industry also loves a good virtue signal, so the next question is why did it take folks such as the Post and Journal 18 months to issue such a piece?
Anyway, that’s enough virtue signaling from me. Check out Friday’s deadlines newsletter, which featured hundreds of approaching dates at the likes of the BBC, Chicago Reader, LSE, Fund for Global Human Rights, Politics Today, Unifrog and hundreds more!
The Association for Women in Sports Media are also giving away 10 free memberships/renewals, so make sure you get in on that and/or spread the word. Check out the awesome tweet below.
