Free legal advice for journalists; new deadlines, internships, jobs and fellowships
Hello folks, another happy Friday to you! I’ve got a bunch of cool things to go through today so I’ll get right to them and then we can turn our attention to the weekend weekend.
First up is a quick reminder of Monday’s newsletter where we added more than 1,000 new jobs and internships. Holy mackerel.
If you want only internships, you can access them on this free link. If you’re after non-internship roles, you can access more than 2,500 of them with a paid subscription, which you can choose from the following. If you’re already a paid subscriber, everything can be found on your existing link.
Enter the code DISCOUNT50 for 50% off.
We’re also making membership to our Candidate Board free for a limited time. If you want to have news organizations contact you instead of the other way round, find out how to join below.
Confusing? I hope not too bad. If you have any questions or issues, email me at daniellevitt32@gmail.com.
Next up is the Reporters Committee For Freedom of the Press has announced a $1.3 million grant to expand its ProJourn program, which partners with law firms to offer pro bono legal advice for local journalists and newsrooms. If you’re in need of legal help or want to find out more, fill out this form.
If you cover the climate or environment, the Oxford Climate Journalism Network is offering a free online course that will provide individual support in identifying relevant sources, sessions with world-leading experts and connections with colleagues at other news organizations. The course will be held from January to June 2023 and the deadline to apply is October 21.
Nieman has opened applications for their fellowships, also open to candidates around the world. There are multiple types and lengths of fellowships that also cater to full-time journalists. The deadline for international applications is December 1, 2022, and for U.S. citizens it’s January 31, 2023.
And we’ll end on the positive, albeit incredibly nuanced, news that the Pew Research Center announced that “after increasing in 2020, layoffs at large U.S. newspapers and digital news sites declined in 2021.” According to Elisa Shearer and Emily Tomasik, possible reasons for the decline could be due to the growth of the U.S. economy, and widespread cuts in 2020 leaving some newsrooms with less room to make further layoffs.
That’s all for this week. Thank you so much, as ever, for sticking with us and supporting what we’re building. Have a great weekend and we’ll do it all again on Monday. 👋
