Hello folks, happy Monday! It’s a lovely sunny and crisp afternoon here in London town, perfect weather to say goodbye to November and welcome in December.
I mentioned on Friday that today was the last “official” newsletter of 2022. This year hasn't been the hardest in my life — that was last year — but it's still been a whirlwind with many ups and downs personally and professionally.
Taking time off is surprisingly hard. First it’s the guilt of not working and feeling that you should be, then comes figuring out what to actually do with the free time. I’m no different and I know I need a few weeks to slow down and do very little, because ultimately it comes down to the old adage that I want to do this for years, not months.
I'll save you the details, and instead discuss some science behind the positive consequences of taking time off. Aside from not wanting to be one of the 745,000 people who die each year of heart disease and stroke from working too much, the day-to-day stress and anxiety of holding down a job — or in my case running a business — can easily consume one’s thoughts and energy all day every day.
In August I traveled to Canada and Colombia for separate weddings, with visits to coffee farms, tropical islands and breathtaking national parks mixed in between. In the three months since I’ve been back in the UK, I’ve made more of an effort to take random mornings or afternoons off to get lost in the park, or zone out at the gym. I’ve felt so much more energized and motivated to accomplish work-related things because I know the carrot on the end of the stick is something fun and that will push me forward personally, as opposed to just more work.
Well, turns out it’s not just me and there are of course specific reasons behind my increased productivity. According to Brigid Schulte, author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play When No One Has the Time, “Neuroscience is so clear, through PET scans and MRIs, that the ‘aha’ moment comes when you’re in a relaxed state of mind.” There are a ton of other clinical reasons why we should all take more time off — okay maybe not an entire month at a time but whatever — and each one feeds into improving our anxiety, creativity and overall well being.
Anyway, rest assured that the job board will be updated in full every Monday like normal. Because Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, we may push updating the board that week to Tuesday, but I’ll update you nearer the time. And I might still appear in your inbox once or twice in December for other things, and we'll then pick things back up in early January.
Before we go, if you have any issues or questions about absolutely anything — the newsletter, freelancing or general life — I am on the other end of an email and despite taking time away, I’d be thrilled as ever to try and help. I’m at daniellevitt32@gmail.com.
And check out Friday’s newsletter where we added even more conferences, events, deadlines and fellowships — we now have 20 on there coming up before the end of the year.
As ever, I am so so thankful for your support. You're allowing me to live out my dream while also helping me to help others find work and other support. Rest up and I'll see you again in 2023. 🙏❤️
