✍️ Jobs Update ✍️ — October 31
Product and strategy jobs at the AP, BBC, CANAL+, CNN, Condé Nast, Disney, Guardian, HelloFresh, NYT, Paramount, Refinery29, Sky, The Telegraph, USA Today, Warner Media, Washington Post and YouGov
Hello folks, it’s that time again. I want to begin today by extending my heart to all those affected in South Korea over the weekend. I simply cannot imagine what the families and friends involved are going through.
Before we get started, be sure to check out Friday’s newsletter with upcoming deadlines at the likes of CNN, Disney, Reuters, the FT, BBC, CBC, el Nuevo Herald, Bloomberg Industry, Globe and Mail, Politico, Euroactiv, Insider and the Boston Globe.
We also updated our list of internships, which currently has 398 opportunities on it. If you’re a paid subscriber, all of these openings are already listed on your job board. If you’re not a paid subscriber, you’re in luck and you can access the list for free.
Okay, let’s do some news… The big election over the weekend took place in Brazil where Lula da Silva won the country’s presidential election with 50.9%, just 1.8% more than the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. Da Silva returns to office after he was jailed in 2018 on corruption charges that were later annulled, but only after Bolsonaro won that year’s election. Poverty, housing and the Amazon will be among the priorities for Brazil’s new leader, but with such a tight margin, Bolsonaro could yet reject the results.
Next up is the launch of the Global South Climate Database by Carbon Brief and the Oxford Climate Journalism Network. The publicly searchable database will allow journalists to contact scientists and climate experts from around the world, to ensure that underrepresented views and lived experiences find their way into the mainstream media. Incredible idea, go check it out.
ProPublica published a groundbreaking investigation into How Google’s Ad Business Funds Disinformation Around the World. Google is unlike any company in the world due to the reach and influence of its many tentacles. Publicly, it is committed to fighting disinformation around the world, but thanks to Craig Silverman, Ruth Talbot, Jeff Kao and Anna Klühspies, we now know how Google’s algorithms placed ads from major brands on global websites that spread false claims on Covid-19, climate change and elections.
And lastly, let’s talk about “news avoiders”. According to RISJ’s 2022 Digital News Report, 38% of its survey respondents said they actively avoid the news. I’m split on this issue. As a journalist, it’s disheartening to see so many people disengaged with what’s happening around world, because of the negative impact it has on people’s moods and their feeling of helplessness. But when I put my non-journalist hat on, I sympathize and totally get it.
Perhaps the most impactful way to frame “engaging news avoiders” is to look at how we can create transparency and build trust with them. That’s what The International Center for Journalists and Trusting News did. Via their Leap innovation training program, they challenged journalists to innovate and create potential products that newsrooms could use, and some of the ideas could go a long way to solving this perennial problem.
Another great resource is the Solutions Journalism Network, whose mission isn’t to just report the news, but to “transform journalism so that all people have access to news that helps them envision and build a more equitable and sustainable world.”
In fact, Solutions Journalism Without Borders — created by freelance journalist Stephanie Capper — organizes cohorts of local and international aspiring journalists where underrepresented communities are responding to chronic social or environmental problems. Applications to spend four weeks in either Vietnam, Guatemala or Morocco learning and producing solutions journalism are now open.
That’s all for this Monday’s edition. Have a great week and I’ll see you again on Monday! 🌊
