Announcement
Hello! Happy Tuesday and welcome to a quick announcement on what’s next for Inside The Newsroom. Over the past two years we’ve covered some of the most important issues including PTSD and the neglect of war veterans with Jason Kander, how to prepare for the next pandemic or natural disaster with Amy Webb, what it’s like to ask questions to Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump with CBS News’ Major Garrett, and how to channel your anger over climate change with Emily Atkin. We’ve also covered every major election around the world so far in 2020 including Taiwanese voters’ rebuke to China, Cameroon’s violent history between its French and English speakers, and the future of Syria and peace in the Middle East. Additionally we’ve put together a journalism job board with around 400 full-time, part-time, freelance gigs and internships that’s updated weekly, and will be expanded in the coming weeks. Along the way, almost 8,000 of you have built a community of journalists, academics and students from more than 20 countries interested in what’s happening at home and around the world.
As time has progressed, so too have my plans for Inside The Newsroom. But in order to realize that vision, I’m going to need your help…
To produce all of the above — two podcasts/newsletters per week and updating the job board — takes between 25-35 hours a week on top of a full-time job, and I’ve realized I can’t do it alone. I think back three years ago when I was a journalism student at the University of Missouri (MIZ!), frantically applying for jobs and trying to get as many clips as possible, all while trying to pay the bills at the same time. Which is why I want to pay students and those just starting out as professional journalists from around the world an actual living wage to help run Inside The Newsroom. To do so, I’ve decided to turn on the paywall at the end of this month for the job board, election coverage and podcasts. The Picks of the Week will remain free each Friday. It’s been a tough decision to make, especially as I started out with little to no intention of charging and have kept everything free for the past couple of years. But now it’s become necessary.
I’ll announce more details shortly, but in the meantime, I’m looking for a couple of people to help me out with various tasks including researching and writing the podcasts and newsletters, proofreading and updating the job board. You’ll be paid an actual living wage wherever you are in the world, and I’ll do my best to pass on all the knowledge and experience I’ve accumulated so far in my own career. If this sounds like something for you, email me at daniellevitt32@gmail.com and we can go from there.
Thanks for your continued support, and I’ll be back on Thursday with a newsletter looking at the countries that have had elections this year, and what’s happened since they each went to the polls.
Thanks again, Daniel. 🙏
